STATE OF THE #SHEA: Now That They Found Love, Part 2

By the time you read this, The Good Doctor may have started filming season four!

SIGH. The pandemic changed TGD’s shooting plans yet again between the time I wrote that first line and the time I posted it live on the blog.

Here’s the news release about the latest delay, in case you haven't seen it.

As for the ins and outs of HOW they move forward, once they do… there have been some write-ups about it, including “shooting love scenes during COVID-19” (which I know we’re all curious as hell about), and from a production standpoint, it’s quite interesting stuff.

BUT… for now you’ll need to look those articles up on your own, because that’s not what we’re speculating on this time. Part 1 of Now That They Found Love, which I posted back in May, opened a few avenues for storylines/episodes that I described as The Good and The Bad:

THE GOOD= things that count as lighter dilemmas & challenges; issues that are able to be resolved in some manner in an episode or two

THE BAD= deeper-rooted situations that have make-or-break potential, though obviously the hope is that Shaun and Lea now have a foundation to withstand such root “damage”

There are plenty more roads to explore, though, so let’s see if I hit on something that you’ve been thinking about as well…

THE GOOD

Improving “little things” before they turn into big things

Quick, what’s the only time thus far that Shaun has said something complementary about Lea’s physical appearance? HINT: Lea wasn’t even there when he said it…

SHAUN (talking to Claire at the hospital): My neighbor, Lea… If she were ever in a fire, she'd be rescued first.

CLAIRE: Why's that?

SHAUN: Dr. Melendez says attractive people have advantages.

(From 1.9 “Intangibles”)

That’s the conversation that started Claire explaining “the flirting trifecta,” which adorably led Shaun to counter Lea’s initial flirt—“You’re such an asshat, Shaun Murphy”—with his own attempt (“Lea… you look ridiculous in that sweater.”)

But that was then, this is now, and while it’s pretty much a given that Shaun is physically attracted to the woman he’s in love with… he has yet to tell her outright, at any stage of their relationship, that he thinks she’s beautiful/pretty/gorgeous/whatever. Not a criticism, just an observation.

Is it important that he learn to say these things that neurotypical men often tell their significant others on the regular? Well… while I do have this filed under the little things, I think one of Lea’s self-proclaimed “needy” attributes might the need to hear the words from time to time (let’s face it, she’s far from alone in that regard). And one thing about Shaun’s reticence on these kind of compliments—if/when he does feel inspired to tell her how he sees her, it could be epic in its own way!

All of this is related to a bigger little thing known plain and simple as communication… a challenging cornerstone for any relationship success, usually broken into pebbles of daily or weekly happenings. The bad news is that ASD makes communication even more challenging. The good news is that Shaun and Lea have a head start, learning what they’ve learned about each other for the past three years. But how far will that head start actually BE now that the relationship, and its expectations, are changing?

Something to think about… suppose Lea and Shaun were to try and help their communication along by mutually agreeing on an “exit line”—a.k.a. a way to improve upon all those abrupt departures of Shaun’s. Something simple, like I love you and I’ll talk to you later? Ah, that’s kind of boring. YOU should come up with an exit line!

(No, really, you should! And if you do, please leave it in the comments!)

Lea, the St. Bonaventurite-In-Training

S4 is also the perfect time for Lea to interact more with others we know and love at St. B. On the one hand, there are a wealth of options: Lea/Morgan (we already know we like that combo), Lea/Debbie (great potential, though they’ve yet to share the screen), Lea/ Claire, Lea/Audrey (who appear to be good friends off-camera already)… or any combo of the above.

On the other hand, a typical “girls night out” scene at a bar or restaurant might prove impossible to year due to COVID restrictions. So… carry-out Pizza at Claire’s house, anyone? Chinese food at Morgan’s? Think Audrey might have room on her motorcycle to give Lea a ride sometime? Or will Debbie air some big-time Glassman grievances while riding shotgun in the Striped Tomato?

It wouldn’t take that many scenes/episodes of bonding to establish a St. B sisterhood of which Lea is now a part. I hope TGD writers consider it. Would be a lot of fun, and a great way for Lea to become defined beyond being Shaun’s Girlfriend.

Speaking of which-- if TGD could hand over an entire episode in S3 to Carly’s character development AND get Carly and Shaun working together (figuratively and literally) to strengthen their relationship (3.12 “Mutations”)… surely they could do something similar in S4 with Lea, a character that (Lord willing) will NOT vanish from the cast a few episodes later?

From neighbors to roommates to best friends to…

For the sake of argument, let’s assume that COVID precautions are NOT going to interfere with shooting #Shea love scenes…

I’m also going to assume that there will be at least as much demonstrative affection between Shaun and Lea from the jump as there was in the final few weeks of Shaun and Carly’s relationship… probably more.

But as they progress towards that First Time we’re waiting for, there’ll be plenty of room for conflict. Maybe Lea will want to wait longer, for any number of reasons (she’s scared, she wants it to be more special than other “first times” in her life, she’s still uncertain about the relationship in general, etc.) Maybe they’ll have a number of attempts that will get interrupted by a call from the hospital. Maybe one or both of them will get upset by efforts to “make everything perfect” for that First Time that go awry… but then when they least expect it, an emotional rush of some sort carries them away.

Whenever Shaun and Lea officially become lovers, I think we need to make the most of it. Because I wonder how much we’ll witness of their sex life from that point onward. There’s plenty the writers could do to explore the challenges/rewards of their intimacy that does NOT come off as a retread of Shaun and Carly, but I wonder if they will. Not necessarily because of the pandemic, but moreso because, as we know so well, the personal stories on TGD are doled out in very limited increments of time. I suspect once it’s been established that #Shea have done the deed, we won’t be privy to a whole lot of pillow talk… if only because the show has bigger relationship fish to fry. At least, for now. (Believe me, I hope I’m wrong as much as you do!)

THE BAD

Shaun’s anger issues, revisited

They’ve got to go there, right? Here are some thoughts on how it could be done…

+  An organic way for TGD to ease Shaun and Lea into that discussion could be a scene that has them in or near the Striped Tomato for what is revealed to be the first time (or one of the few times) since the baseball bat incident. This might carry more credibility if they remind us that Lea has TWO cars, as they did when The Tomato made its debut on the show in the “Islands” episodes. (IF she still does?) Lea could make a lot of excuses for driving them around in her other car…then freeze up or react in some other, adverse way when circumstances placed Shaun back in the vicinity of her most prized possession.

+  Otherwise, it might take a flare-up on Shaun’s part—not necessarily sparked by Lea, but just in general—to trigger a conversation. Maybe Lea would pull away from such a flare-up, retreating silently (rather than trying to talk Shaun down) in recollection of that awful night last spring. How long might it take Shaun to counter-react to such non-verbal communication? Calling on my ASD experts…

+  Since I can’t imagine going through a season of TGD without some highly emotional moments from Dr. Murphy, it seems more a matter of when than if he’s wrestling with his anger. But I truly hope that if Lea’s involved, it’s in a way that doesn’t have her questioning her decision to be with him. No guarantees for that, I know… but something that might factor into that is the timing of such an event. If it were to happen in the back half of the season, would it seem less threatening than it does right now because the relationship will have a few miles under its belt by then?

Lea’s “worthiness,” revisited

When Lea laid out her initial rationale against a relationship with Shaun, we got several confirmations about her perceived low self-worth. How will that play out now that she’s made her leap of love/faith? As Andreas pointed out a while back, telling Shaun he “made her more” in the final minute of the season didn’t give us much insight into how he does it… or how she internalizes it.

My point, which you probably know already, is that Lea’s self-esteem issues aren’t magically erased because she’s with Shaun now and knows that he loves her. If anything, she’s likely to hit some real low spots in the coming year—whether she’s questioning her ability to hold up her end of the relationship, or entrenched in a family issue, or feels she’s faltering at work (however her St.B role officially evolves). OR…maybe she’ll be just as much “a mess” as ever, but it seems like more because we’ll see HER more.

Shaun sounded confident when he told Lea (during the final three minutes of “Autopsy”) that he thought he’d be able to handle her neediness/selfishness/messiness if they were to pursue a relationship. But will that confidence hold up when their love is tested? It’s a difficult enough question for a neurotypical person; when it’s a person with ASD… well, that’s exactly what Lea was getting at when she initially walked away with tears in her eyes. With that in mind, I can’t imagine TGD writers will ignore these challenges in S4. I also can’t imagine Shaun doing anything less than finding his own way to rise to any occasion necessary. Hopefully that’s not me simply being over-optimistic.

An Outside Force to Be Named Later

There’s going to be at least occasional conflict if #Shea are to get any screen time; if it doesn’t stem from the characters themselves or any of the ideas I mentioned in the May edition of Now That They… , here are a few more options:

+  A new character (maybe one replacing Dr. Melendez)? A temporary character, a la Dr. Han? An extension of something that might happen between Lea and a member of her family? I should add that I don’t mean to imply a new character could come into the show setting their sights on either Shaun OR Lea… there’s plenty of things that can crop up without a hint of an issue of romantic betrayal.

+  A crime that Lea falls victim to… I’m saying Lea, not Shaun, since he was in the holdup in S1 and was also hospitalized in S2 after his (very brief) bar fight. But he IS the titular character, so I suppose he could be the victim of a crime too. Perhaps something that happens while they’re out on a date?

+  Since we just witnessed a natural disaster in San Jose, another one seems less likely… BUT… we had a 2-part quarantine in S2, and a 2-part quake in S3… what could be the 2 parter this time? And what long-term effect will it have on #Shea (if any)?

Readers, if you’ve got any offerings for that last idea… or, want to share your own take on S4 storylines for #Shea (my suggestions, or your own)… you know where to share your thoughts!

A post more specific the role ASD plays in romantic partnerships is what I plan to do as a final installment to this Now That They… series. Look for that in September!

As much as I want to see a frenemies relationship develop between Lea and Morgan, your suggestion of Debbie riding shotgun in The Striped Tomato while complaining to Lea about Glassman made me literally LOL. It's been established that they're both car chicks, so that would be a great place to start their bonding, and then it could ease over to the men in their lives, because Lea knows how much Shaun and Glassy care about each other, and Debbie has to know by now how much her husband cares about Shaun, though it hasn't been overtly shown much. (Shaun was best man at their wedding, and ended up asking Debbie her opinion on two bouquets of flowers for Carly because Glassman was in the shower. There's plenty of room to elaborate there, is what I'm saying.)

One of the biggest parts of Shaun's character is rising to challenges. Now that I really think about it, as I sit here writing this, while Shaun has never met a professional challenge that he didn't rise to meet from the pilot onward, mostly successfully (please NEVER make me watch Dr. Han condescend to Shaun EVER AGAIN), his personal challenges have been a mixed bag, and romantically speaking, things were very problematic with Carly for him because A) she didn't know him as well as Lea knows him (a hill on which I am prepared to die), and B) she could get very pushy and instead of backing off when it got to be too much for Shaun, she got angry, like when she told him to get out when he couldn't lie in bed with her for 30 seconds (a problem I presume Shaun won't have with Lea after sleeping in her arms all night at the end of "Friends & Family"). I agree that Lea won't rush intimacy. But I would love to see both her and Shaun trying too hard to make their first time some momentous, monumental event and it goes awry, and then their actual first time happens organically and ends up being momentous and monumental even without a lot of buildup and planning and scheduling.

At this point, we can't know when the show will be back or how close they'll actually be able to have Shaun and Lea being because of the real-life COVID pandemic, but I remain hopeful. This is only the beginning for Shea, and there's a lot for them to explore with this relationship, as well as further cementing Lea's status as an individual and her job at St. B. Whenever they come back, I'll be here, and I'll be rooting for Shea.

I know it can be frustrating to see another delay, but there is an encouragement to take from it. If they can get all of these details and discussions sorted out up front, it should minimize the chances of a shutdown later because of the rush to get back. Plus, less of a chance that the story is compromised due to the restrictions (accommodate the "new normal" - sure - but don't cheapen or remove a good story if it isn't needed).

As to the discussion at hand, I agree with many of your points. I'm particularly interested in seeing how they move forward from the baseball bat scene. On one hand, it was too big of a moment to just brush off. But on the other hand, if there's a time skip of any significant length, I'd hate to see it still be a lingering issue / grudge.

One way I would like to see it resolved is with the idea of self-forgiveness - which can linger beyond inter-personal forgiveness. Perhaps Lea and/or Shaun ARE able to forgive each other for the pain they each caused, but one or both are struggling to forgive themselves - thus, creating an early (but manageable) stumbling block. They can even tie it into a patient / another character "punishing" themselves when they don't need to.

Great mention of the two cars. I'd love to see the show address it again - even if just to say that Lea had to give up the other car to settle debts from the Hershey debacle. And honestly, it might help bring more people on board with Lea overall just to see how hard others (parent? brother?) have been on her. No character will ever be 100% liked, but I do think the show can do some fairly simple things to "boost" Lea in the eyes of at least a handful of skeptics - AND allow Shaun to show just how he CAN respond to a tough personal (not just medical) situation!

Personally, I hope the show doesn't bring on a new regular character this season. Allow the 8 returning regulars to develop - including the more senior doctors like Andrews and Lim (who seemed to tag in-and-out at times). None of them should be missing 6 out of 20 episodes, like Lea in Season 3 (and Carly, though she was at least mentioned in 4 of the episodes she missed). Perhaps allow a few "young" doctors (interns, or first-year Residents) become recurring characters, and take the best of them and upgrade them for Season 5.

As to your point of Lea being a possible "victim" of something, I can't argue against it (consistent with my point above about Shaun being there). Of the 8 returning regulars, 5 of them (Shaun, Glassman, and Lim in Season 2; Claire and Morgan in Season 3) have been a patient at some point. That leaves Lea, Park, and Andrews (debatable, depending on whether or not you consider him to be a patient after refusing the fertility treatment in Season 1) possibly to "step up" in Season 4. Why not make it by virtue of true victimhood??

I do have some fresh ideas of my own, which I'll share in a little while. But hopefully this is enough to soak in for now! And on a note of good news, at least in the US, the Season 3 DVD is slated to be released this upcoming week. I can't wait to see what deleted scenes/bloopers are in store!

Hey guys, I have a reader/#Shea fan that's having a hard time posting her comments so I'm doing it for her... this is from Valerae! (as she's known on Twitter)

***

Hi!! This is my first time posting something in the blog but I declare myself A FAN. I am relatively new to this fandom but I love the energy it has and how great it has been to find people who I can relate with, specially on the #Shea appreciation and love. I'm very sad about the delayed in filming, which not even feels like a delay because we don't have a new starting date, It just feels like they stopped.... *sighs* I will quote one of my favorite characters in TV history and just say... "I want to believe" this is just a small rock in the way and filming will start this month as predicted.

Regarding this post, I would like to say that I completely agree with all the posibilities you present here whether it is for THE GOOD or THE BAD.

I know I'm not alone when I say that #Shea will face many challenges in the way, we cannot expect a perfect relationship, if it was it won't be epic and wonderful as this one is... So, starting from here, I will refer to the first point about "little things" which of course I agree... It is pretty obvious Shaun thinks Lea is a very beautiful woman, and that beyond his unquestionable love, he feels attracted to her, physically... *Coug* his entire body language in the last kiss of the "I love you" episode screams passion! *cough* But, I guess that because of how their relationship remained most of the time as a platonic friendship, he has not being vocal about this, at least with Lea.

However, on the other side, Lea has flattered him in several ocassions not just for his looks like she did in Islands first part when she called him "cute", but also for his qualities as a person like she did in the "Autopsy" episode when she said he is the most wonderful man she has ever met.

CONT'D from VALERAE!

So, in my opinion, Shaun needs to get on board too... specially now that she will become his significant other, and I trust him, he will... just because I think that with Lea, his reactions are natural, and he does what his heart says... So if he feels she is gorgeous and he is sooo in love, he will say it, without hesitation.

With Carly, he was very charming, yes maybe he was following advices and research to achieve this, but with Lea it will come more easily.

As for the an exit line... how about a gesture? They could go for a peck on the lips, maybe they can manage to understand each other only by this instead of a word.

I have always believed that the character of Lea deserves a more extended development, I know that there are many Lea/Shea haters out there, I am also certain that you have discussed here the Melendez death's effect on this phenomemon, and yes, I am to blame that. But, I also blame the lack of development of Lea's feelings throughout the entire third season. She was in love with Shaun already and yet she always showed a very comprehensive almost passive attitude regarding his relationship with Carly, so people tend to believe her love is not true, we didn't have a concrete reaction from her after the autopsy episode and that was damaging for her declaration afterwards, in my opinion, here lays many of the haters too. As a matter of fact we need to analize Lea to understand her, and not everyone is gonna take the time to do so. Hence, to see her bonding with the other ladies at St. B.would be nice, specially with Claire, who tends to be good for extracting people's feelings and reactions could be great a way to understand Lea more and Claire might be in needs of a new friend after the tragic finale of season three (Rooting for this friendship to be honest).

I think that the Lea's episode related will be the one where her family will be introduced and we get to see a glimpse of her past, and of course it could be an amazing ocassion to bring her and Shaun closer, maybe after this event we would get to see them making love for the first time. Maybe she will show him that what they have is serious deal and after a confrontation with her family he chooses him...

CONT'D (part 3)....

Regarding the love scenes, this is the only reason why the delay is not a problem because if they are making sure they (Freddie and Paige) feel comfortable enough to film this kind of scenes then I will wait. Because, please, we need Shea to have real intimate scenes, and don't get me wrong I'm not talking about a nude or sex scene (Which is almost impossible imo anyway) but to see them sharing intimate moments such as laying in bed, holding each other and talking... I don't expect the same treatment they had with Sharly's relationship, because to me the series just showed how good they were having sex but not how good they were building up intimacy, they couldn't even talk to each other... he had to seek advice on her female co workers to make things work. So, I don't want something like this between Shea, I prefer them to have their own bubble, so we can enjoy of their ride building up love more than sex.

Now, The Bad... I know that the moving too soon has been discussed and I agree it will bring a bit of drama, though I predict they will end the season living together...

When I think about reasons that might cause little misunderstandings between them I always recall the "I don't need to impress Lea" line, I feel like Shaun will be more open and it will be Lea, perhaps, who will be more conservative and would like to take things one step at a time, in order not to mess things up, she could be the one who needs to let go and work on her self esteem issues and understand that she deserves to be loved by such a great guy.

To address the Car incident is something that absolutely need to happen during the first episodes of the next season, there is a very beautiful fanfic called "Stand by me" by Rose Amelie in Fanfiction that has a conversation on this subject and to me is very close to what might happen, they need to forgive each other for the things they did in the past in order to stablish a healthy relationship, so I'm looking forward for this conversation. Whether this happens next to the car or just talking to each other at the department.

In my opinion, this new season should be more Shaun's career oriented, and agreeing with that many of his difficulties will come from his work place and since Lea is there and she is part of his life, they could affect their romantic relationship causing some friction. (never breaking them apart, please!!! ahahha)

Maybe Lea would feel she can't handle his anxiety issues or he might be focused on something too much letting her by a side, making her feel lonely...

Hopefully, all situations will be solved in the base that they love each other.

As for an outside force getting in the way, well my bets are that maybe Lea could be involved in an accident, not a deathly one of course, but enough to cause drama, maybe by this event we will find out she is pregnant... hahahah sorry I let my mind fly a little, but hey it's television anything can happen and I sure want #Shea to get the whole package in the end so...

Thanks for your posts and look forward for the next...

Vale!

Thanks, Vale! It's always great to see other reactions, especially one as well-said as yours! I cannot agree more that Lea is in great need of further development in order to quiet some of the negativity.

And Amy, I absolutely LOVE the idea of Lea and Debbie developing a bond! Looking at the other women, Claire and Morgan already seem to have each other as that go-to friend, while Lim has her hands full with being Chief of Surgery. Plus, it would be an interesting Dennis the Menace-like dynamic, where the grumpy Mr. Wilson (Glassman) was easily annoyed by Dennis (Lea), while the reception from MRS. Wilson (Debbie) was an absolute delight!

You and Amy both hit on some good points as to what we might expect due to the virus restrictions. I know we all wish first and foremost for everyone's safety, and look forward to seeing the show be able to begin shooting for Season 4. Our second wish is that as long as safety IS maintained, for the stories to be authentic and not "cheapened" (O.R. scenes, personal intimacy, or even just friendly groups). I have no way to know for sure, but I feel good that as long as the testing is regularly done and all is well, then we shouldn't have a problem getting a solid story.

As to actual narrative content, a few things greatly intrigue me.
1. The thought of people for the 4th-year Residents to supervise/mentor. Hopefully it's a long-lasting development that doesn't fade as quickly as the "first lead surgeries" arc once everyone had their crack.
2. The "Chief Resident" position was hinted at a few times in Season 3; it'll be fun to see the cooperation/competition as that comes closer to the forefront.
3. Career ambitions for EVERYONE! The aforementioned supervision and Chief Resident prospects; Morgan's new path and landing spot; Park's balance between work and family; Andrews's quest to regain some leadership; and even Lea's quest for something that brings life-fulfillment (I really love how she's not money-motivated, and left TWO good engineering jobs on her own accord).

I think Season 4 has a great potential to shift a lot of that focus back to the workplace, while still having plenty of room for personal & relationship development.

As Valerae mentioned Lea getting into an accident (or becoming a victim of something or any outside force) and the audience finding out she was pregnant (I think what she was trying to say), there is actually already one fanfic ("A Piece of Her") that deals with that. Lea suffers from postpartum eclampsia, but she sadly doesn't make it. However, the way the birth of her and Shaun's daughter was written...that definitely looked like the kind of drama that would happen on "The Good Doctor" or any medical show.

But if there is any pregnancy-related outside force, I do see a pregnancy scare being possible.

Kelli Lawrence said...

Yes, you've touched on two thoughts that stay in the back of my head with Shaun and Lea's future, although I don't think of them for S4... 1) Something happening during pregnancy for Lea (miscarriage, or something else) that throws their relationship into turmoil, and 2) Lea being killed off the show a few years down the road (if it's on that long) either because Paige Spara gets a better gig, or the show decides Shaun needs a crushing new challenge in his personal life, or both...

Drama is drama, after all. But I hope we all get a rest from THAT kind of turmoil for a good long while!
